Dr. App: videoselfies for mental health

mobile applications are here to stay and beyond games, management tools or business or personal promotion, some evolutions tend towards trying to improve our lives. Some of these Apps are part of what is known as mHealth , or mobile health, and their objective is to collaborate with medical departments to facilitate the detection and treatment of some diseases . In this blog we have already told you about this type of Apps. Recently we echoed applications designed for a first diagnosis , such as those intended for review our sight before going to the medical consultation. Other Apps of a marked medical or health nature are those that act as nexus and communication channel between patients and doctors or the Apps that monitor a patient and send their data for a subsequent analysis and diagnosis. Among the latter is the application they are developing at University of Rochester , USA, whose function is to determine the state of mental health of the users. Still in the testing phase , this multiplatform App – suitable for mobiles and computers – is capable of determining if our mood is positive, negative or neutral based on our reactions during the web or mobile browsing. To do this, it relies on a series of video images taken randomly and without prior notice. With them, the program analyzes the behavior of the user; actions such as the time between blinks, the keystrokes, the messages that are sent, an approximation of the heart rate or the radius of the pupils. With all this, the App is capable of issuing an accurate diagnosis . To outline this App , the researchers participating in the project have had the collaboration of 27 people. All of them have been subjected to different tests and reaction analyzes in order to be able to calibrate the diagnoses. Although, for the moment, the evaluations focus on three aspects: positive, negative or neutral attitude, the researchers have already started the second phase of evolution of this App. The objective is that an accurate diagnosis can be given, even specifying pathologies based on the selfies videos taken by the App. If this is achieved, and although it should never be taken as the only medical element, the progress in early diagnosis z would be spectacular. Another problem would be if this App was left only to analyze the reactions of users to a specific product in order to determine its future acceptance in the market; a type of test that many companies would pay large amounts of money for.
