How to create an event app. What to consider and what elements it should contain + practical example

The holding of an event is one of the events marked in red marker on a brand's calendar. It is a key moment for those companies that go out into the street to adopt a tangible presence, beyond the land occupied by their offices, to meet their clients and future buyers and to let them know about the latest news. If you are an event organizer, you probably have a website with which to explain the characteristics of the event to your attendees. To explain the aspects to take into account during the process of creating an event application, we will exemplify the different sections of this post with an example of an application created with our platform, King of App. This application was created for the World Cup in Russia, trying to create specific content for the Spanish team. Contents of an event app

We start by defining what elements an event app should include. Although not all of the sections discussed below are essential, since each type of application will have its specific needs, it will be advisable to consider implementing them in some way. Keep in mind that The content of your application is focused on a very specific period of use. It is not an application that you will be monetizing for a long time (that is not the objective of an event app, at least in principle), so it will have to respond to very specific questions, focused on the event itself. In the case that we use as an example, our World Cup application was designed to experiment with it during the period that Spain participated in the World Cup, although once the event was over and having obtained a significant user base, it was planned to give it a twist to turn it into a more generic application about the Spanish football team. In order to create an event app You will need to determine and add a number of basic sections and elements:

Event Description

First, you will need to determine a section that defines the event itself. What is the the objective of the event, the topics covered, the very reason for the event… In this same tab you can enter information such as dates and place of ticket sales with a button to the site where to buy them if you are going to promote their acquisition long before the event… Also indicate the event location, a map and a button that provides directions to the user to get there. You can use a single section to define the event or You may need several pages to cover different topics., in which case it will be convenient to group them using a common menu. You yourself will have to determine how you classify content, whether you have to create one section or several that talk about the event, whether you link from the main screen or from an internal menu. Each event app responds to a specific need and as such it will have specific characteristics.

Speakers' sheet

Depending on the type of event, there will usually be different participants or speakers who give talks related to the main theme of the event or what they are experts on. In the case of a sporting event like the one in our example app, instead of speaker profiles we create one for each player. If there are only a few speakers, you can link each one's profile directly from the main menu or Design a screen that summarizes your profile and expand from a more specific screen. If the number of speakers is high, you will create a vertical menu-like file in which a button appears to the file, such as a resume/presentation, of each of them. In addition to the file that describes the speaker, you can include an internal link to another place with information about your presentation or include it directly on this screen. Add access to your social networks through buttons. Depending on the type of speaker, it will be interesting to add a gallery of images, well selected and inserted manually or, directly, embed their Instagram. Although the World Cup is not an event in which speakers participate making a presentation, it was possible to create a file for the participants, in this case for each of the players. We created a file with a similar structure for all: name of the player, a header image with the photograph of the footballer and a file with all their data: age, place of birth, position, number, sports career and other data. Program of presentations

Will there be any presentations or events during the event? Create a schedule with the times and place where each of these will take place.. You can choose a list that includes all the events of the different days as a summary with the option to click to expand the information of each one. Within each file, more detailed information is provided, link to speaker profile and, if you wish, a button so that the user can register. In the case of the national team app, instead of presentations, matches have been played, which have been updated with the results of the latest matches.

Participating brands in the event

If there are participating brands, you can create something similar to what you did with the speakers. Having a large number of brands is a great support for your app, as it builds trust. Just as you could do with the list of speakers and a specific page for each one of them, you can do the same with the brands. Include a page with a header image or logo of the brand, a description of the brand and its relation to the event. What they are coming to present, their commitment to the theme of the event and where they can be found within the event.

In relation to the previous paragraph, if your event is organized in a large space, with different locations of interest, it will be almost obligatory to add a site map indicating where the different locations are located: stands, meeting points, access points, conference rooms, cafeteria, toilets, etc.

In the Spanish team's app, King of App acts as a sponsor would in your event app. In this case, since the app has been created with this tool, its logo has been placed on the loading screen announcing that the app has been developed with King of App. However, we decided not to introduce brand content within the app since its relationship with the content of the app itself is too heterogeneous.

Real-time news and social media

Implement social media features or a news feed to constantly update them and display the latest information, in real time, within the app. You can embed your own Twitter, Instagram or use other third-party APIs to project interesting comments and news for event attendees.

Section of previous editions of the event

Why not include information about previous events? You can reflect on the success of previous editions by generating expectations about the new event.

Interactive elements to engage event attendees

Add interactive elements to your event app so that the user can interact and feel part of the action occurred during the event:
  • Create a section of videos, whether for informational purposes or for educational or entertainment purposes.
  • If it is a musical event, you can add a playlist to Spotify so that the user can learn about songs from participating groups…

Other elements that will complete your event app

Other elements that would be interesting to add would be:

  • You can make a profit if you enter purchase items through third-party platforms. In addition, in-app advertising is not overly annoying, but it won't bring you much profit either, so it is best to consider using a different ad platform. You probably don't want to insert banner ads over which you have no full control. Yes, it might be interesting for your sponsor to insert some kind of advertising for their brand. Include a banner with static content or generate a specific section within the app that works as branded content of the brand in relation to the user's theme. In this case, it is important that the content specific to the sponsoring brand adds value to the application without having an excessively advertising purpose.

Designing your event app

When you customize your app you must keep in mind that, like so many others, The design will be a component that will project your brand to the user. We used sans serif text, combining different thicknesses. I also created a specific icon for this app, placing a minimalist version of the World Cup cup in the center combined with the colors that surround the entire app for this event.
