They would be a kind of Tente either Lego either Meccano according to each person's preferences. But in any case they will not stop being phones. The new Google and its main competitor. The first is called “ARA” and is very close to seeing the light; the second one is called “Vsenn” and is committed to safety. Both are mobile phones that are assembled piece by piece.
Always innovating. Always looking to surprise and, therefore, be a leader in a tremendously competitive market. That is Google and its penultimate attempt is this modular phone that is being developed in the premises of a small technical engineering company (NK Labs) run by Ara Knaian
In collaboration with the engineers of the group of Motorola Advanced Technology and Projects, a division it retained when it agreed to sell the handset maker to Lenovo earlier this year, Google is looking to launch a phone that would be sold as a chassis only so that, incorporating various modules, users could customise it. These modules could be different processors, batteries, memories, cameras, sound or more exclusive things like a biometric module, a video game module, GPS… The chassis will only include the screen, which would be available in three sizes: mini (4 inches or less), medium and jumbo (almost like a phablet). Beyond customization, this system would allow for constant updates based on the module that has evolved.
According to Google, the implementation in the system ARA It will be free and open source, which raises many possibilities and is increasingly seen as a truly original idea that, if successful, could revolutionize the market.
Apparently there are already some working prototypes of the Ara, but the truth is that today standard mobile phones offer a better size-price ratio than what Google could offer. The surprising thing is that Mountain View wants its price to be around 50 dollars, although we will have to wait at least until the middle of next year to know for sure whether they will be able to fulfil not only this intention but also other aspects more closely linked to the functionality and tastes of their potential clients.
Also with the intention of gaining this new market appears Vsenn, a project led by a former employee of Nokia which relies on security as a weapon of seduction.
Vsenn It will be much less complex than the ARA since it will only allow you to choose three components (battery, processor and camera) on a chassis that will be fully customizable based on interchangeable casings.
However, it will be much more secure than its competitors, they say while working on three layers of encryption for data entering, leaving or stored on the phone. The operating system used will be Android, in its cleanest version, with the promise to stop updating it four years after its launch.
And the third in discord is Phonebloks, of which we leave you an explanatory video:
