“Protect yourself”, an App against harassment

“With all great power comes great responsibility” and this on the network is 100% fulfilled. The responsible use of the Internet should already be subject in all the schools of the world so that the youngest know how to defend and protect themselves in an environment in which not everything is what it seems and where practically any content or person can be accessed. The Internet, and social networks, is a powerful tool, useful but also full of surprises. To the recent and notorious theft of intimate photos or compromising of celebrities (and not so famous), to the attempts to access succulent bank accounts, to the continued sale of our personal data voluntarily transferred to databases data from around the world, behaviors are added to it on a daily basis that must be especially watched: this is the case of cyberbullying . Cases of harassment in the network we have them daily. One of the most recent was the one starring Zelda Williams , daughter of Robin Williams, who had to leave her Twitter account due to the insults following the death of her father. Another case that the microposting network has removed has been that of Miriam , the girl who has faked her suicide by denouncing the apparent harassment suffered simply for being a fan of Selena Gómez (and by the way get your attention). Even though they are two very different cases and that require a more than deep analysis of social behavior, they do serve to demonstrate the need to be more than attentive to possible cases of harassment that occur on the Internet ( and outside of it) because no one is safe whether you are the daughter of a famous actor or a totally unknown person. For those who detect or suffer any of these cases, the world of Apps has also made a useful tool available to them. It is Protect yourself , an application jointly developed by Telefónica, Yoigo, Vodafone, Orange and the Internet safety center for minors sponsored by the European Commission Protegeles.com. This App allows you to report any type of harassment through new technologies such as “ grooming ” (sexual harassment of minors on the Internet), “ cyberbullying ” (school bullying on the Internet) or identity theft on social networks. To do this, when using it, it puts minors in contact with lawyers, psychologists and security experts to try to find the best solution to the problem. Likewise, Protect yourself allows minors to determine the level of basic knowledge about safety and responsible uses of new technologies in order to prevent them from becoming the protagonists of a conflictive situation. This App can now be downloaded both in the Apple Store and in Google Play .
